What’s your role at Flexe?
I am a Group Director of Account Management at Flexe. I help retailers and brands design a more dynamic supply chain.
I could not pass on an opportunity to be a part of what I truly believe is the future of distribution and fulfillment.
What’s your story?
Currently, I live in sunny Atlantic Beach, Florida (making me the farthest remote employee from our headquarters in Seattle). I guess you can say transportation is in my blood. My dad worked for the railroad his entire career. After I graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor in Communications, I thought I’d move to NYC and work in Public Relations. Turns out, I couldn’t resist the call of the transportation industry. My first job out of college was with an international shipping and logistics company. I worked there for 10 years before joining Flexe.
Logistics is an industry where you can continually reinvent yourself.
Why the move to Flexe?
I met the Flexe team at the RILA conference back in 2016. After the event, I could not stop talking about the Flexe model.
A year later, I received a message from our current VP of Business Development, Adrian, who asked if I was open to exploring a career at Flexe. The solution is incredibly innovative with so many applicable use cases, and I could not pass on an opportunity to be a part of what I truly believe is the future of distribution and fulfillment.
The decision did not come without heavy consideration; I felt extremely secure in my previous position. However, after making the trip to Seattle and spending time with the team, I instantly felt that energy you get when you are surrounded by like-minded people working towards a common goal. I realized the excitement and sense of collaboration I immediately felt with Flexe outweighed any position I could have chased in a more traditional working environment.
Our founders are amazing role models of work-life balance.
What excites you most about the logistics industry?
Logistics is an industry where you can continually reinvent yourself. Over the past 12 years, I’ve had the chance to work in container shipping, trucking, warehousing and distribution (both domestically and internationally), customs brokerage, and air freight. Every facet of the supply chain is evolving quickly. At Flexe, we’ve invented an old-school-meets-new-school approach that helps companies solve their everyday supply chain challenges in a modern way.
We work smart and efficiently without the perceived pressure that you can only contribute by being at your desk from 8–5.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I love to snow ski! Growing up in Florida, surfing is typically the outdoor sport of choice, but I much prefer the mountains and the snow.
If you had your own personal warehouse and could fill it with any one thing, what would it be?
I would choose wine, but then I would have to accompany it with cheese.
How do you make time for your loved ones?
Our Business Development and Operations teams travel quite often, so it is important to sneak in deliberate moments of time while we are at home — like when I join my daughter for lunch at her school. Our founders are amazing role models of work-life balance. One trick I have learned from them is to block out time on your calendar for family-specific activities such as dropping kids off or picking them up from school. I have always been impressed with how mindful and respectful everyone is with each other’s time. We work smart and efficiently without the perceived pressure that you can only contribute by being at your desk from 8–5.
“I can’t say enough good things about working with Katie. We work together on all kinds of projects and we’re always on the same page.” — Jael Yamamoto, Manager, Deal Desk, on working with Katie:
What are your hobbies outside of work?
Tennis is one of my favorite year-round hobbies. We regularly play in a Sunday Funday league, and when I am home during the week, we try to pick up a few doubles matches. Spontaneous travel is another one of my favorites. Having a busy travel schedule for work, we tend to book opportunistic flights the day before we leave based on which locations have the best weather or weekend activities. Some of our most memorable trips have been to Banff and Cuzco, Peru.
